We have made our way to Marquette where we are spending the night in a marina for the 5 essentials (fuel, pump out, water, laundry, and groceries). This morning was very foggy so again I am very thankful we have auto pilot, radar and AIS. The fog did clear as we got close to the harbor so we made it in safely.
The weather has been interesting this far U.P. north. It’s in the 60’s during the day and has been as low as the 40’s at night. There is often thick fog in the mornings and it gets windy in the afternoons.
Pictured Rocks is one of the amazing sights we saw along the journey. It is a coastline of granite cliffs that have a bunch of caves, odd formations, and a multitude of colors. It is quite a tourist draw from land, sea, and even air tours.
We are headed out early, again in the fog, to our next stop, an anchorage about 50 miles further along Lake Superior. Anchorages are few and far between in this lake as there is very little shelter from winds. We are getting within striking distance of Houghton Michigan where we will (hopefully) get a spot along the downtown area on a free seawall that even has power. One of my training captains, Joe, has a house in Houghton where he spends many months throughout the year and he is there now so we will be spending the 4th holiday with him and his friends. It should be a great time as Joe is a character and we always have a fun when we are together with him and sometimes even his wife, Patty, but she is not up here this time.
From Houghton we will be continuing our journey towards Duluth, Minnesota where we will be meeting my sister, Leslie, and her husband, Vince, for a week cruising the very west end of Lake Superior. This will be a great experience and a lot of fun as this is a place that not very many people get to explore. We are hoping to expose them to anchoring out for at least one night. That should be a different adventure for them and we are looking forward to it.
That’s it for now. Keep checking back on us and have a wonderful 4th of July holiday. Love to all, Gina and Mike
