We are now at day 8 through the Erie Canal. Since we had free dockage and electricity and were a day ahead of schedule we decided to stay in Rome for an extra night. Did get some maintenance done that needed attention.
From Rome we proceeded into and through Oneida Lake, the largest lake entirely within the state of New York. It does have a problem with blue green algae blooms, but is supposedly non-toxic and not harmful. I still won’t be getting into it since I can’t see completely through it.
Last night we were anchored in Three Mile Bay in the lake for the night. A white boat may not have been the best choice in colors when picking a boat. The lake flies and other irritating bugs love white. The boat was covered, I mean covered, in bugs yesterday. At least they were not bitey bugs. They were just annoying and made a mess.
This morning Michael discovered the water cooled generator was not spitting out much water so he investigated and discovered the sea strainer was completely stuffed full of sea grass and weeds. So much so that he had to take the entire water flushing system apart to clean it out. Apparently while the generator was on we were vacuuming the bottom of the lake and bay. Thank goodness he happened to look overboard and see that or else we were likely going to blow up our generator again and this time probably not as easily fixable as last time.
Today, after stopping in a marina along the way for diesel, water and pump-out, we headed to Lock 23, the final lock on this part of the Canal journey. We are tied to the seawall for the night and will proceed to our next stop, Pirates Cove Marina in Clay NY, in the morning. There we will be staying for 10 days, after which Bruce and Diane will be joining us for the 7 day journey to finish up the Erie Canal and into Buffalo, NY.
Tomorrow looks to be a rainy and windy day soooo, here’s hoping getting to the marina and docking goes well….. Stay tuned on our adventure. Love to all, Gina and Mike.
