On the way to the Dismal Swamp we stopped overnight at the Elizabeth City free (Yes, free) docks and as expected for free, a little rickety, but still safe and we did not float away. Elizabeth City, known as the Harbor of Hospitality, has a rich history dating back to George Washington days of the 1700’s along with many historic sites. Since we were there on a Sunday, most places were closed, but we still walked the historic downtown area and read all the signs and eventually located a brewery where, of course, we stopped in for a beer and seltzer. The waterfront where we were docked was pretty and gave a real old village, water community feeling.
