We had a very nice visit with Leslie and Vince over the week in Duluth. However, the weather was awful so we were only able to go out for a cruise through Duluth Harbor and into Lake Superior one day of their visit. But we did Duluth fully and thoroughly, with visits to museums, restaurants and, to Michael’s and Vince’s delight, ice cream shops. We found one in particular that was spectacular, Loves Creamery, which had amazing combinations like Turmeric Honeycomb, Goat Cheese and Honeyberry, Salted Honey & PB&J, Salted Caramel, and Hot Chocolate to name a few and of course, Michael’s favorite, Mint Chocolate Chip.
With Leslie and Vince heading back to home in South Dakota, we headed out of Duluth to make our way back toward Saul St. Marie and eventually out of Lake Superior. The first day we traveled 80 miles, over 8 1/2 hours, to an anchorage on Stockton Island, one of the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. The next day we traveled another long day to Ontonagon, MI for the night then back into Houghton to the free wall for 2 days. There we learned that the free wall will no longer be “free” as the city workers were putting up signs along the wall informing boaters to “check in at the kiosk for overnight pricing”. The issue is that they have not constructed the kiosk yet. Typical government; put the signs up first then figure out how to make it work.
While we were at the wall in Houghton some asshole decided to step onto our boat so his wife could take his picture, like it was his boat! He had no idea we were on the boat and I was watching him. I threw the door open and screamed at him, what the F did he think he was doing, this is our home, not some Disneyland ride there for his pleasure. He jumped and I got the usual, “Oh ho ho ho, so sorry” from the asshat. If I had seen his shoe prints at the time I would have made him clean up after himself; damn.
From Houghton we traveled another 81 miles and over another 8 hours (those are really…really long days) to Marquette where we will get the essential 5 chores done and Michael is changing the boat’s transmission oil. Looks like we will be here for 3 days. Marquette is a nice decent sized town that we did not get to explore our first time through and we have the time this trip so will be doing some sightseeing. From here we will be heading to a couple of anchorages off Michigan then to Sault St Marie for another few days before we head back into Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and into Green Bay, Wisconsin for a week or so where we will be picking up friends, Susan and Kevin for the trip out of Green Bay and down the Wisconsin side to Milwaukee where they will be leaving us. That should be a blast!
Thanks for following us on our journey and check back in a few weeks for updates on the adventure. Love to all, Gina and Mike
