We completed our 11 day trip around the St John’s River. We spent 7 very peaceful nights on anchor with some gorgeous scenery and very few other boats. Even had a few gators in the area too. We traveled down to the Lake Georgia area on the river and dinghied into a clear water spring that put out 65 million gallons of water a day.
That was crowded and looked like the Colorado River on a weekend. We have traveled out of Florida and up into Georgia where we anchored for 2 nights off Cumberland island and spent a day walking through the old Carnegie homestead (now a National park) and saw a bunch of wild horses (one was even born that morning), armadillo, a black snake, a huge crab, and raccoon that we scared up a tree. I have a great picture of him leaning around the tree up high to make sure we were not following him. We anchored at Sunbury Crab Co Marina the last 2 nights. The only reason I am mentioning that is it is very close to Hinesville,GA where I was born. I even wore my “made in Georgia” t-shirt for the occasion.
We are currently anchored just south of Savannah and will be in Beaufort (pronounced Buford) South Carolina at another marina tomorrow for the necessary 5 (diesel, water, pump out, laundry, and groceries). From there still heading north. This leg of the trip has been very peaceful as we are putting along slowly. I am making my peace with the winds and currents and even parallel parked this behemoth once. We have met many, many wonderful people along this journey and everyone has a great story and a lot of seasoned advice. We even met “ourselves” last night. They too are from CA, they sold their house, bought a big boat and are doing the loop too. Had dinner with them last night and each of our experiences mirrored the other. Down to finally figuring out why auto pilot cuts out sometimes, usually a critical point. Will keep in touch as we progress. Love to all, Gina and Mike.
