We are still moving toward Holland Michigan where we will be pulling the boat for the winter. We have been to several cities and are currently at our second anchorage since leaving Mackinac Island.
Petosky was a bust as I got sick and spent the four days there essentially in a coma. The next two cities, Charlevoix and Leland were only a very little better as Michael was down for the count there. We did manage to get out into Leland for a little walk through the historic Fishtown.
Leland began as a large village originally settled by Indians hundreds of years ago and later by fishermen attempting to start their fishing businesses. Located along Lake Michigan and the mouth of the Leland River, salmon run in the late summer upriver to spawn while visitors flock to see them jump over the 12 foot dam. Leland is now a popular tourist destination with one of a kind boutiques and shops all within walking around the town.
From Leland we proceeded to Frankfort for two days and met up with Mark and Laura on Wild Life, who we initially met in Cocoa Village and they were part of our party crew on Mackinac Island. Laura found a sushi restaurant that was supposed to have the best sushi anywhere and since I have not had good sushi since 2020 when we left California, I was excited! Well, that was short lived. The sushi was awful! What little taste it had was old and stale like the rice was from the previous few days. What a let down! I’ve had better sushi from a gas station.
We pulled out of Frankfort early on Saturday morning in fog and under questionable wind conditions to position us further south. The upcoming weather forecasts look to possibly be troublesome so we are attempting to cut the distances we need to travel to our final destination by our haul out date.
Turned out that once we got out of the harbor and turned in the right direction, the wind and waves were tolerable enough so that we bi-passed our first spot and continued on for another 30 miles to our next anchorage option in Ludington Harbor. That was a nice peaceful stop for the night. We were expecting to stay there for 2 nights, again because of weather, but Michael threw the dice and we moved again early this morning into Whitehall Lake where we are currently anchored in a raging rains storm. We will probably be here tonight and tomorrow as the forecast has rain pretty much non-stop until Tuesday and from there, who knows where we will end up.
Keep touching back until this season is brought to a close in a few days. Love to all, Gina and Mike
